So I think it's generally believed that very low consistency will hinder a player's development and render him less effective as an NHLer.
I'm starting to think otherwise.
In a personal game I'm playing, my offence is built mostly around low-con guys and they are thriving.
Miguel Laramee
Pos: 1st line LW
Con: 30

Frank Kahn
Pos: 2nd line RW
Con: 50
Ratings: 83 OF, 88 DF
Development: Overdeveloped in all areas. Was once 99 DF. Has since declined a bit as his career is almost over
Points last five years: 88, 93, 81, 88, 71
Adrian Liokumovich
Pos: 3rd line C
Con: 38
Ratings: 85 OF, DF 73
Development: Only 25. SH low, PL low, ST high, CH low

Thoughts? My team has had major success the last few years while being built around a bunch of low con guys who weren't high picks. |

My experience is that low CON guys, put int he right situation, can do fine at the NHL level. In fact, they can even outright thrive. For quite some time Dmitri Shitikov and all of his what, 30 CON, was a staple of my expansion games because he always did decently immediately in the NHL.
I also have long suspected that one or two of my key skaters in my REHMC game had very low CON just by their performance, but they developed fine in the NHL (again though they spent no time in the AHL and were signed directly to NHL icetime).
It's the development in the AHL where they often suffer. A low CON guy in the AHL has a miserable time, more often than not, and won't develop very well. A low CON guy in the NHL can find a place, I guess, and even develop quite nicely. A low CON guy in the AHL just goes there to pretty much die...

| Every guy I posted there spent at least two years in the AHL and their development didn't seem to suffer at all. In the past I've only drafted low con guys in order to trade them, but with the success these guys are having, that may change. |

I didn't do anything out of the ordinary with them. Just kept them in junior till 20, then signed them to my AHL team, made sure they were on the top two lines, then after two or three years I called them up. Most of them started on my fourth line in the NHL.
They were usually ready after two years max in the AHL, but sometimes they had to wait longer because my team was pretty deep. Kahn, if I recall, only played one year in the AHL.
I've had the odd low con, high ceiling guy not pan out in this file, but a whole bunch of them have.
I forgot to mention three of my d-men are low con too - Rico Swessey (53/89 - was actually a 5th rounder), Devan Oates (72/86) and Calvin Chicavich (61/87). |

| Pretty normal... forwards to attack, defence to defence. Although I may have trained Kahn on defence, can't remember. Set my AHL training to something like 70% personal, 20% general, 10% special teams. |
